Starting January 1, 2025, a new rule in Estonia will require rounding the total amounts of cash transactions in all sales points to the nearest 5 cents. This change applies only to cash payments, aiming to reduce the use of coins in daily transactions and simplify financial operations.
What Does This Mean for Merchants?
To implement the new rule, merchants will need to update their POS systems and accounting software. Additionally, it is crucial for merchants to inform their customers about the change and explain how it will affect their everyday shopping experience.
Rounding Rules
For cash payments, the total amount of the shopping cart will be rounded as follows:
- Amounts ending in 1, 2, 6, or 7 cents: Rounded down to the nearest 5 cents.
- Amounts ending in 3, 4, 8, or 9 cents: Rounded up to the nearest 5 cents.
- Whole amounts and amounts ending in 0 or 5 cents: Remain unchanged.
Examples:
- Total: €9.99 → Rounded to €10.00 for cash payments.
- Total: €9.97 → Rounded to €9.95 for cash payments.
- Total: €9.92 → Rounded to €9.90 for cash payments.
